Sonia is excited to be joining the A Rocha Aotearoa New Zealand team providing parental leave cover for the Eco Church Community Coordinator (Wellington region).
Growing up in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, Sonia’s earliest memories are of enjoying time outside in native bush in the town belt near her home, instilling a love of creation from a child. She studied Environmental Science at Lincoln University before embarking on a variety of roles during her career. Her roles have included being an atmospheric science technician at NIWA (Lauder, Central Otago), compiling New Zealand’s greenhouse gas inventory at the Ministry for the Environment and providing scientific input for mobile phone apps for farmers to reduce fertiliser and water use while working for Regen (now part of CropX). Most recently she has been a carbon auditor and certifier with Toitū Envirocare and she is looking forward to bringing that experience to this role to help churches with calculating and reducing their carbon footprints.
Sonia is part of the the St Andrew’s on The Terrace church community in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington and has been involved with environmental initiatives there including establishing a church garden and organising and participating in Season of Creation services. She is also the parish advocate for Christian World Service.
Sonia lives with her husband in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai/Lower Hutt and enjoys pottering outside in the garden, dancing, going for walks and reading.
