Moe mai rā Malibu Hamilton

Kua hinga he tōtara i Te Waonui a Tāne.

It is with incredible sadness we say goodbye and acknowledge the passing of Malibu Hamilton. Malibu was the Te Whakaoranga o Karioi convenor who helped establish the Karioi Project’s vision and goals for restored biodiversity on Karioi (together with about a dozen local volunteers) and hapū in 2009.

Malibu led and supported the establishment of an incredible number of environmental and community initiatives that helped protect and support our local community, coastal forests and marine environment.
Malibu’s passion was for people, justice and nature – he got on with things quietly but with great determination. He was incredibly humble, kind, patient, wise and a mentor for many.

Malibu told us that what he had learned over the years was that – “We had to be willing to have the hard conversations with people while continuing to be soft on the relationship.” Accepting that sometimes we had different ideas about complex topics, we could nevertheless persevere, figure things out together – while also having those tough conversations. Because what we wanted to achieve was so much bigger than any of us – and that was restoring a mountain.

Our hearts are grateful for all Malibu has done.
Nature thanks you Malibu!
We will miss you so much!
Moe mai rā Malibu.

A Rocha is actively involved in the Karioi Project, a community-led conservation project working to restore biodiversity primarily through predator control and species monitoring at a landscape-scale together with the amazing support of the local volunteers and partners. The Karioi Project inspires the amazing Raglan community to take a stand for nature and to protect the places we love. Together, we’re turning the tide on biodiversity loss and successfully re-wilding our corner of the world.
